It was temporarily taken over by the Commonwealth during World War II and returned to Council in 1984. Since then, it has undergone developments and improvements to service standards. By 2010, the airport had been serving over 400,000 passengers annually. The airport serves as a gateway to Toormina, Sawtell, Bonville, Bundagen and Repton to the south, Korora, Sapphire Beach, Monee Beach, Emerald Beach, and Sandy Beach to the north, and Karangi, Upper Orara, Coramba, Ulong, and Lowanna to the west.
