Queen Lavinia Niuafo'ou Airport – NFO Niuafo'ou, Tonga

Known as Queen Lavinia Airport (NFO) the airport in Niuafoʻou is near Angaha. Located in Sapaata in Tonga, it is situated in the most northerly island in the kingdom of Tonga. Construction of the airstrip began in 1980. However for a time, scheduled air services were suspended and became operational only for flights chartered by members of Tonga's royal family. Upon its resumption not too long ago, the small airport in Tonga started to offer a few non-stop domestic passenger flights. Because of the limited airport service, the island remains one of the most isolated in the worldbut has a growing population of about 750.

Best Time to Visit

There are limited domestic air services operated by Real Tonga Airlines that connect Niuafo'ou to Vava'u and Tongatapu. Planes fly only twice a month if weather permits. Travel time from Vava-u is approximately one hour and 30 minutes. The airport also serves a few charter flights. The facilities of the airport are undeveloped. There is one shack that is used as a makeshift operation center. The flights land and take off on a single runway with a grass surface that is that only 2,799 feet in length. Niuafo'ou is a unique destination with Niuafo'ou volcano dominating the island.

What to Do & Area Attractions

There are no resorts, hotels or even hostels and inns on the island since tourist infrastructure is almost non-existent. The best lodging options for visitors are privately-owned village houses that offer guest rooms within the area. However, you can also book rooms at the Le Vasa Resort or the Jet Over Hotel or the Le Manumea Resort, all located in Apia, Tonga.
