Nome Airport - OME

Nome Airport, with the airport code OME, is a public airport that serves the city of Nome, Alaska. State-owned, it is located approximately 2.5 miles west of Nome’s central business district, and is the only entryway to the city other than via the Iditarod Trail, as well as a couple of cruise ship stopovers per year. Once an Air Force base during World War II, this airport is currently the hub of Bering Air, and offers flights to Anchorage and other parts of Alaska. Gamers may know of this airport through a featuring in the game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Best Time to Visit

Owned and operated by the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities - Northern Region, Nome Airport has two asphalt runways situated at 38 feet above sea level. As of 2010, the airport had an average of 76 aircraft operations daily, more than half of which was for air taxi services. Bering Air flights have been utilized by a local pizza restaurant, located just east of the facility, to deliver pizza orders for free to isolated Alaskan villages.  Flying in to Nome Airport makes it easy to travel to other villages in the Nome Consensus Area such as Diomede and Savoonga.

What to Do & Area Attractions

Travelers who prefer to stay near the airport can book a room at the Aurora Inn & Executive Suites located 1.5 miles away. Alternatively, comfortable rooms can be reserved at the Nome Nugget Inn and Dredge No. 7 Inn, both within 1.6 miles from the airport. There are no shuttle services offered among these accommodation options, but guests can hire a taxi service for the short transport to and from Nome Airport.
