Adak Airport – ADK Airport
Adak Airport is categorized as a general aviation facility. It is for public use and located on Adak Island, Alaska. It is the farthest western airport in the United States that has scheduled passenger air service. It is also one of the most sophisticated and largest airports in the whole Aleutian Islands. The ADK Airport is a world-class facility with two runways with an asphalt surface. The facility was built by the US Navy. Its runways run at a length of 7,800 feet and 7,600 feet, the latter being permanently closed. The airport has an Instrument Landing System and a glidescope as well. Historically, Adak Airport was used as an army airfield both by US air forces and the Navy. On March 1997, the Navy officially closed the portion used for Adak Naval Air facility and it is now transformed into a National Wildlife Refuge. As of 2011, the airport had a total of 340 aircraft operations and a total of 2097 passenger boardings as of 2010. Once enplanement reaches 2,500 in a year, the airport can be considered a commercial service facility. Jet service is provided by the Alaska Airlines with routes to Anchorage.
