Nikolski Air Station IKO Nikolski
Presently owned by The Aleut Corporation, the Nikolski Air Station in Nikolski, Alaska started as a military airport. As such, there are a few commercial flights from smaller aircrafts coming in from this unattended, private airport. It has an airport code of IKO, and it brings travelers to and from Umnak Island. The IKO Nikolski Airport sees an average of 160 to 220 flights each year. Near the airport are a few inns for exploring the best of the Aleutians West Census Area.
Best Time to Visit
Built in 1958, the Nikolski Air Station was designed as a support to a bigger military air force base. The nearby Cold Bay Air Force Station then operated it, and it features its own radar station. In 2000, the property was revitalized and all the military equipment was removed. Now, it features a gravel runway 3,512 feet long, which is primarily used by a Grumman Goose G-21A by Pen Air. Travelers can also shuttle to and from the Dutch Harbor and Unalaska through Grant Aviation.

The Nikolski Air Station is surrounded by views of the ocean and abundant nature. The surrounding municipality near the airport is the Unalaska Island, which is the second largest city in the cluster of islands near Nikolski. In neighboring Unalaska Island travelers will find the Grand Aleutian Hotel, a three-star massive property, which features comfortable rooms, restaurant, bar and the marvelously scenic Xatacyan Lagoon.
