Tripoli: The Heart of Libyan Economy
Tripoli, Libya is the capital of the country. It is also the country’s biggest city. It was established by the Phoenicians in the seventh century BC. The Mitiga International Airport (MJI) and the Tripoli International Airport (TIP) are the airports that serves Libya’s capital.
Best Time to Visit
With a hot semi-arid climate, the best time to visit Tripoli is during the months of February through June and October through December. The busiest months are usually February, July, and August. Tourists are least likely to visit in November. One of the most exciting events in the city is Tripoli International Fair (TIF), which is held every May. It is a commercial exhibit and trade fair launched by the Italian government in the 1920s. As such, it is considered as Africa’s oldest trade fair.
What to Do & Area Attractions
One of the most well-known attractions in the city is Red Castle Museum or Assaraya Alhamra Museum or Archaeological Museum of Tripoli. Founded in 1919, it showcases 5,000 years of history, from prehistory to the independence revolution period. Collections at the museum include ancient Libyan tribes and traditions; Islamic architecture; Italian Libya, World War II (WWII), Libyan independence, and 20th-century Libyan heritage; Libyan culture during the Phoenician-Punic-Greek-Roman-Libyan-Byzantine-Ottoman Tripolitania/era; natural history of Libya; and prehistory of Libya. Another interesting site to visit in the city is Tripoli International Stadium, a multi-purpose venue that can hold up to 88,000 spectators. Take the time to visit the June 11 Stadium and the Gurgi Mosque. A number of Tripoli hotels provide promising accommodation services and top notch amenities, such as the Al Naher Hotel, and the Plasma Hotel Tripoli.
