Suai Airport – UAI Suai

Suai Airport lies 9 miles from the town of Suai in the municipality of Cova Lima in East Timor. Also known as Commander in Chief of Falintil Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão International Airport, it was formally inaugurated on the 20th of June 2017 following a major extension and rehabilitation project launched in May of 2014. The president of East Timor himself, H.E. Dr. Francisco Lu-Olo Guterres, cut the ribbon at the ceremony and signed the inauguration plaque to formally open the airport.

Best Time to Visit

Among the significant upgrades from the rehabilitation of the Suai Airport are its new 1,500-meter runway, terminal building, control tower, fire station, meteorological station, and a helipad equipped with Medivac air ambulance facilities. This major infrastructure undertaking is intended to promote increased national connectivity and support national development. It is part of the government’s commitment to further growth throughout the Timor-Leste region. The first ever international connection to touch down at UAI Suai took place on the 28th of September 2018 when it received a flight from Darwin, Australia. Lolotoe, Fatululic, and Fohoren are within 13.6 miles of Suai Airport, while Atambua is less than 31 miles away in Indonesia.

What to Do & Area Attractions

Many of Suai’s hotels and guest lodgings are located on the new road that links the airport to the borders. One of the more popular in close proximity to Suai Airport is the Eastern Dragon Hotel about 2.4 miles away, with newly-renovated rooms, a supermarket, and a Chinese restaurant. There’s also the Hotel Suai, about a hundred meters from Eastern Dragon, which offers more basic facilities than its more modern neighbor.
